Ten-Year Old Kwesi Boakye Stars In The Number One Box Office Film And Finds Tyler Perry An Inspiration
With
attention-getting performances from big-named actors and actresses such
as Taraji P. Henson (2008 Best Performance by an Actress in a
Supporting Role for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.), Gladys
Knight, Mary J. Blige and Adam Rodriguez, Kwesi is adding this film to his already prominent acting resume.
Kwesi’s character, Manny,
is one of three children that have to live with their Aunt April,
played by Taraji P. Henson, after their grand-mother disappears.
Considered to be a difficult character to play, Kwesi said his
character is “a very tough kid and he is a little rough around the edges with a very sharp tongue as he had to grow up pretty fast.”
The
Los Angeles Times referred to Tyler Perry as “a one-man empire,”
writing, producing and directing but is now also a mentor of new
talent. Tyler Perry is known for discovering young talent and Kwesi is
now considered one of the hottest new child stars in Hollywood. As a
new addition to the big screen, Kwesi is considered one of his protégés. The young star is busy receiving outstanding reviews by critics and moviegoers.
“Somebody
has to give the underdog a chance,” said Tyler Perry. “As you will see
in this movie there is a lot of new and great talent”
Taraji P. Henson
also found Kwesi’s performance noteworthy. She found his acting skills
impressive and was especially amazed at his ability to cry on cue.
Kwesi, a modest and mature child, described his crying techniques as
just being easy, “I just think about something sad like how my dog got hit by a car and then I cry.”
Kwesi
also exceeds in the tedious challenge of memorizing lines. Mature
actors in the movie business face challenges of memorization, but to
Kwesi, his photographic memory allows him to learn a script of any
length with great ease.
“I am unsure of what the longest script I have had to memorize is, but it was definitely double digits, one hundred percent,” boasts Kwesi.
Working with a big name like Tyler Perry can be nerve wrecking and working
on set with so many celebrities generated a little nervousness
initially. But having the opportunity to work with Tyler Perry was a
chance of a lifetime.
“I knew him before the movie and I have always been a big fan,” said Kwesi. “It
was like a dream come true when I finally got to meet him and it was a
good experience working with him. He has a way with kids and breaks
things down in the movie with a kid’s version.”
For
Kwesi, the hectic routine of working on a film was enjoyable. “It was
fun because every day someone would crack a joke and everybody would be
laughing,” said Kwesi. “It was a very fun place to be and I really
would love to work with Mr. Perry again.”
Kwesi admits that the greatest lesson taught while filming was that he “learned how to ad lib,” a specific trait Tyler Perry is known for.
Kwesi’s charm and wit helped light up the big screen and at such a young age, his prolific acting career continues to grow. In August 2009, filming began for “Men of a Certain Age,” the new TNT series starring Kwesi, Andre Braugher and Star/Executive Producer Ray Romano. Mike Royce, writer and producer for “Everybody Loves Raymond,” reunites with Ray Romano for the hour-long drama.
“It’s called “Men of a Certain Age” and
there are three men who are in their mid forties and they are going
through a mid life crisis and I am one of the men’s son,” said Kwesi.
“My character’s name is Jamie and I play the son of Andre Braugher. I
have another little brother in the script and our dad is going through
a mid life crisis and we’re caught in the middle of it.”
An audience can expect a lot of humor from the new TV series because, as Kwesi says “It’s fun. Ray Romano is a big star and he’s very funny and he tells a lot of jokes.”
Recently, Kwesi booked the new Disney Princess movie, The Princess Frog.
This will be Disney’s first full-length cartoon adaptation of an
African American princess located in the French Quarter in New Orleans,
set for release in December 2009.
