A Dance Moment: Chapter Two – BreakDance, Part 2/Beat Street
What up players? We’re back with another installment into a series of words dedicated to the art form of dancing. Well, for this chapter, street dancing or “Break Dance”…
Back in the Day, lets say, 1984 in the South Bronx of New York, where two very popular break dance groups, The New York City Breakers vs. the Rock Steady Crew, squared off at “The Roxy” to a packed house of eccentric dancers & B-Boys from all over. Cold representing the culture of Hip-Hop. Little did they know down the line into the 2000’s, including ourselves, that this incognito ‘competition’ between the two would later become a classic style of showmanship & ‘battles’ now incorporated in a lot of todays’ dance movies & flicks, as well as your prime-time TV shows like ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars”. In any way, shape or form.
Of course, there were plenty and various b-boy contests throughout New York and other areas of the world that we are quite sure are documented and has been videotaped back before 1984, more so into the 70’s and early 80’s. The culture has it’s roots, that’s fa sure…
With that said, flashback with us young dancers, fans & admirers of the art – Here is a clip from the movie, “Beat Street” showing the 2 hottest break dancing groups, ‘Gettin’ down!
We came a long way…..didn’t we?
